No.

Is Gandhi Relevant?

Bapu claimed that neither his philosophy nor his methods were his inventions. His philosophy was based on truth, love, peace, and nonviolence, all of which were as old as the rivers and mountains and since his methods evolved from his belief in truth, love, nonviolence, and peace they became timeless too.

Truth, love, peace, and nonviolence are the building blocks of civilisation. Communities were formed on these ideals and the groupings of many communities became civilisations. Thus, one can say that our existence depends on our adherence to these basic essentials, just as life depends on air, water, nutrition, and heat.

Personally, I get very irritated when the question whether Bapu is relevant today or not? How does it matter whether Bapu is relevant today or not? Bapu did what he had to during his lifetime. Now it does not matter to him whether we consider him to be relevant or consign him to the garbage heap. If at all, we must ask ourselves whether he matters to our continuing existence?

Now let’s take the elements that formed the foundations of Bapu’s belief and methods and see whether they are important to us even today or are we better off without them?

Can we live without truth? We in our cunningness have invented the term ‘convenient truth’ and each of us adheres to that and attempts to convince ourselves that we adhere to the truth, but the fact is that when we listen to our inner voice, we realise that what we attempt to convince ourselves is really not the truth, but just a feeble pretence, a sham, lies disguised as truth. Truth is eternal and monochrome, it is singular and positive, this is the truth that Bapu said, everyone would listen to the tiny faint inner voice which continuously speaks to us, which lives within us and speaks to all of us all the time, but only a few of us choose to listen too. Those of us who do, have realised that when the inner voice becomes loud enough, the absolute truth is heard. But to hear our inner voice we have to develop a spiritual inclination of selflessness, courage to listen to what is inconvenient and often critical, only then can we comprehend that which our inner voice attempts to tell us. Most often our inner voice is our most honest critic too, and so we need to have the courage to hear and accept what it says. Without truth no relationship can survive, without truth it is difficult to trust, without truth one can never make friends and so in other words without truth society cannot exist. Now can we live without truth? No, we definitely can’t. And since Truth was one of the main elements of Bapu’s belief, his belief becomes as timeless as Truth itself.

Can we live without love? There are many forms of love, its carnal avatar is the only one which is temporary, finite, all its other spiritual and emotional forms are immortal and everlasting. The love shared by a mother and child begins when a mother learns that she has conceived, the embryo may have bonded much earlier, we don’t know yet, and ends when both cease to exist. The love between siblings may not always be apparent but it manifests itself in separation. Siblings may not be able to tolerate each other when together but separate them and the love manifests itself. The love shared by a father with his offspring is unique, it is one of the versions of love, which is truly mercurial and changes with time, but the bond remains inviolate and grows stronger. Love between teacher and pupil, I have always loved my teachers, even though as a student I made life miserable for them, but when faced with life’s challenges I have always acknowledged the debt I owe to my teachers, who equipped me to face the challenges and overcome all hurdles in my path and taught me that failure was never the end.  The bond of love between friends is also of a very unique nature, we fight, we break up but at the first opportunity we get together again and make up, what is life without friends? The love between spouses and lovers manifests itself in all its forms spiritual, emotional and physical and makes the relationship stronger. In all relationships we form, love is the cement without which the individuals would never be able to bond with one another, we would find it very difficult to bond with our companions, build families, communities, societies, and civilisations without love. So, is Love Eternal? Yes, and since Bapu believed in love, he becomes eternal.

Is peace essential for our existence? The answer is a resounding ‘Yes!’  Can we survive amidst hostilities? No. Mankind cannot survive and thrive without peace, it cannot flourish in a hostile atmosphere, it cannot thrive when subjected to hatred. Societies and civilization were formed only after human beings learnt to peacefully coexist. Even today we see the breakup of nations occurs when hostilities break out within their populace more often than when they are threatened by external aggression. Bapu said ‘an eye for an eye would end up making the whole world blind.’ If ‘an eye for an eye’ was the doctrine by which we were to live our existence would have ended much earlier. But peace does not just mean an absence of hostility. True peace means living in harmony with everything, human beings, all life forms, nature, and environment and respecting the right of all other life forms to their share of the bounty of nature and their right to exist and thrive.

It is only when our existence is put in peril that we realise the importance of peace and then we end up paying a great price to re-establish peace but for our continuing survival peace is inevitable. So is peace eternal? Yes, it is and if peace is eternal can Bapu ever be irrelevant? No.

Is nonviolence necessary? Many a times we consider the absence of hostilities as nonviolence, but that is a simplistic definition of nonviolence. True nonviolence is a lifestyle, it means we do not violate anyone else’s space due to our existence, we do not violate the balances of nature, we do not violate air, water, land its bounties or the environment. Ideal nonviolence does not leave behind a footprint or leaves just the bare minimum. But that is the purest form of nonviolence, which is difficult to achieve in day to day life but one must strive to lead one’s life in a way that we leave behind the faintest possible footprint. Nonviolence does not simply mean that we desist from fights, it means that we harm as less as possible, the passage of our life becomes as less damaging and demanding as possible and we leave behind earth, environment, and atmosphere the least bit soiled due to our existence. ‘Nature has enough to provide for everyone’s needs but cannot provide for anyone’s greed.’ Bapu said, and one’s greed is a very potent form of violence. This was Bapu’s belief in nonviolence which was timeless and which when violated comes back to haunt us in the form of the ozone hole, the resultant global warming and climate change and poses a threat to our very existence. Nonviolence is not just effective in ending conflict and war, once hostilities break out it is too late to hope that nonviolence can save the day. Nonviolence is a way of life. So as long as life is precious, nonviolence can never become less necessary. Bapu based his entire philosophy on the principle of a nonviolent life and hence he becomes as eternal as nonviolence is for our existence.

Thus, as long as Truth, Love, Peace and Nonviolence are essential for our wellbeing and our continued existence, how can Bapu not be relevant?
